CARTES will celebrate its 25th edition in 2010!

Launched in 1986, just a few years after the first smart cards appeared, the CARTES trade show in Paris brought together a handful of experts for a programme of strategic conferences covering payment and e-money.

Over its 25 years, CARTES has undeniably established itself as THE international event bringing together the entire digital security, payment and contactless community. The event has become the trend setter for the market and the sector's innovations.

Taking advantage of the festive atmosphere which will already prevail in Paris in early December, we will be celebrating 25 years of the trade show, as well as 15 years of the Sésames awards. Those three intense days will provide a special opportunity to combine socializing and networking, with informative conferences as well as a few amusing retrospectives.

We will also be inviting you to open the trade show up to new perspectives, with a vision of what the future may look like thanks to the contribution of our industry to the Internet of Things.

Book now for this very special event on 7th- 9th December 2010!

The smartcard: a major innovation of the 20th century!

A series of technological innovations

  • The basic concept behind the smartcard dates back to 1946 when John Biggins, a Brooklyn banker, introduced the "charge-it" card. The security of this new payment method relied on simple elements like embossing and the cardholder's signature strip.
  • In 1974-1975, Frenchman Roland Moreno, director of the company Innovatron, created what would actually become the smartcard; a memory card with an integrated circuit.
  • In 1977, German scientist Jürgen Dethloff filed a patent for a portable memory card with a microprocessor. Today, two-thirds (in value) of smartcards have a microprocessor. A few months later, Frenchman Michel Ugon, an employee of Bull, filed a patent for a comparable technique called CP8.
  • In 1979, petroleum services giant Schlumberger acquired a stake in Innovatron and began research into memory cards.
  • In 1980, the memory card group was set up by a consortium of French banks in order to use smartcards as a new means of payment: the future bank card!
  • At the end of the 1980s, the bank card group, the successor of the memory card group, ordered 16 million CP8 cards, launching the general roll-out of the smartcard in France in 1992.

Industrial development and creation of the CARTES trade show

  • It was really in 1984 that the first memory card was marketed, TÉLÉCARTE created by Schlumberger for France Télécom (cards fitted with micromodules). Since then, telecoms have always dominated the volume market.
  • In 1985, Bull issued its first bank card with a microprocessor.
  • 1986: The CARTES trade show was launched: It was held for the first time at the CNIT, with a handful of exhibitors and already one high level conference on payment and e-money.
  • In 1988, Marc Lassus founded Gemplus in France. Up until its merger with Axalto in June 2006, creating Gemalto, the company was the world leader for smartcards.
  • General roll-out of chips on French bank cards took place in 1993, reducing fraud by 50% in less than four years.
  • By 1995 the CARTES trade show had around 100 exhibitors and a surface area of nearly 2000 sq.m.
  • In 1996, the SESAMES Awards were created.
  • In 1998, CARTES had 166 exhibitors and its surface area had more than doubled (4500m²) compared with 1995. The congress was attended by nearly 1000 delegates!
  • In 2000, the 300 exhibitor mark was reached. That year the smartcard industry made around 1.6 million units, two-thirds of which were memory cards. The growth rate reached an average of around 16.5% year.
  • In 2001, the IT Security sector was launched and the first country to be a guest of honor was the USA.
  • In 2002, CARTES moved from the CNIT to Paris Nord Villepinte and the Steering Committee was set up.
  • The rise of the microprocessor card over memory cards was marked in 2003 when memory cards fell into a minority.
  • In 2005, CARTES celebrated its 20th anniversary and attracted more than 400 exhibitors from 40 different countries. The IDentification sector was created. Between 2005 and 2006, the smartcard industry's growth rate exceeded 36% as a result of telecoms and e-government.
  • Growth slowed from 2006, but the industry has maintained its upward momentum: 6% growth expected between 2009 and 2010.
  • In 2010, CARTES is celebrating its 25th edition and the 15th year of the SESAMES Awards.
