Manufacturers of payment terminals depend on the development of the banking sector. They are split between Ingenico (40% of market share), Verifone (36%) and Hypercom (10-12%).
The growth factors of the market in recent years are related to those of the banking sector:
Manufacturers have difficulty maintaining their margins as the sale prices of payment terminals have fallen due to increased Chinese competition.
As a result, terminal manufacturers are extending their operations to cover new related services:
Mobile telephone manufacturers are the second category of manufacturer: Nokia is the leader with 36% of the market, followed by Ericsson, Motorola and Siemens. These companies are following smartcard developments very closely and are stakeholders in the drafting of new standards.
Since 2008, security attacks against mobile terminals have increased five-fold. More protection systems for mobile terminals are being developed and this market is due to represent $2 billion dollars by 2014.
